Computer science and engineering is the academic discipline devoted to the study and research of various aspects of information technology of the 21th century. It covers a wide range of subjects relating to computing, from the theoretical foundations of computing to application systems based on information technology. Our goals is to further our knowledge of the principals, algorithms, techniques and applications for all components of computing systems. Considering that most human activities use information in a high tech society, the significance use information in a high tech society, the significance of computer science and engineering is paramount, not only to maintain a technological edge but also to improve people’s quality of life.

The Computer Science and Engineering Department at POSTECH provides undergraduate and postgraduate programs to educate students who will become national and worldwide leaders in information technology with a balanced knowledge of theory and practice. The Department also conducts world class research in a comprehensive range of information technology areas. The research areas of the department are broadly divided into four areas; System and Software, AI and Data Analysis, Digital Media and Networks. The faculty members of the departments are leading experts in their research results are well recognized and they are actively involved in key roles for research activities in Korea and Worldwide. The department has one government supported research center (ITRC) and one national research lab (NRL).

The educational vision of the department is to stimulate and encourage the students to become global leaders at the highest competitive level.To realize this vision, the department has restructured the undergraduate curriculum so that students to visit and work at leading information technology companies and research institutes, such as Microsoft Research Asia. The motto of the department is to guide the students to realize world class dreams by cooperating and facing all challenges.

The research vision of the department is to conduct innovative research towards the goal of creating the integrated information society of the future. To achieve this vision, the department ifs fostering research on integrated systems that will lead and fulfill industrial demands while focusing research on integrated systems that will lead and fulfill industrial demands while focusing on high impact creative core research for both society and industry. With this approach, the synergy and harmony between faculty members is expected to produce top notch research results that will make the department recognized world wide. In addition, the department in planning to form a partnership with the research institute of a global information technology company in the near future. To make this vision possible, the department will continue to recruit the very best faculty members and improve the education and research environment, pursuing our aim of making POSTECH CSE a world leader in the information technology area.
